An Inside Look at My Everyday Clean Beauty Routine
It’s safe to say that my obsession with makeup is very real.
As I mentioned in one of my previous blog posts, my first makeup encounter involved a blue eyeliner pencil in the sixth grade…Yes, I know that blue is not a conventional color for everyday eyeliner—I was 11, and the color seemed like a really fun choice…That phase did not last long at all, for obvious reasons, but it was because of this novel product choice that my relationship with makeup truly began.
Over the years, I’ve experimented with countless makeup brands and products, too many to even convey here (yes, it’s been that many) …To give you a brief overview: Following my short-lived stint with blue eyeliner, I began using a brown eyeliner pencil, which eventually became brown liquid liner, and ultimately, the black liquid liner I use today. With the exception of eyeshadow and mascara on special occasions, eyeliner was really the only makeup product I consistently used up until the end of my high school years. From here, I cycled through various concealers, both in liquid and cover-stick form, foundations, powders, mascaras, and eyeshadows—of course I found products that I liked, and used on a repeat basis, but I was always on the lookout for something “better”.
As you can see, my choice in makeup has evolved significantly from the time I first began experimenting with it—sometimes because a product would be discontinued, almost forcing the issue of finding something new, but also because I was never completely satisfied with the products I was using. In fact, it was only in the past few years, when my mom and I began experimenting with “clean” beauty brands, that I found the products that work the best with my sensitive skin.
Made by Honest Beauty and Burt’s Bees with high-quality, naturally sourced ingredients, here are the four products that hold a place in my daily makeup routine—the ones I use for any and every occasion:
I’ve always been all about the eyes. To define and enhance my green eyes, I use the Honest Liquid Eyeliner in black. The thin and flexible applicator allows me to create seamless looking lines on both my upper and lower lids within minutes each morning, lines that maintain their integrity and smooth appearance throughout the entire day.
For added definition, I use the Honest Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer. This Primer and Mascara duo adds significant volume to my lashes with just a few coats, and without creating the “clumped” look that can result from over-application.
For a clear and natural-looking facial glow, I use the Honest Cream Foundation in the shade “shell”. This foundation not only provides smooth and light coverage to my fair skin, but the cool, pinkish undertones within the shade add a little extra color to my face’s natural complexion, which is definitely necessary during the winter months.
I finish off my face with the Burt’s Bees Mattifying Powder in the shade “vanilla”. While this powder could be used alone, in lieu of a foundation, I like to use it on top of my cream foundation to further smooth out any imperfections, set the layer of foundation, and give my made-up face a matte finish.
Together, these products give me the perfect everyday face of makeup—an elevated natural look. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll use more than just these products for special occasions-eyeshadow, blush, highlighter-whatever fits the look I’m going for. On a daily basis, however, this core four is all I want and all I need to feel refreshed and ready for whatever my day has in store.
